The American Institute of Conservation is proposing certification for conservators.

All views and opinions expressed are those of the authors, not AIC or CIPP (Conservators in Private Practice), a speciality group of AIC.

ALL viewpoints are welcome.

I feel certain that this system will certify conservators who are not truly qualified. It follows that at some point one of AIC’s Certified Conservators will destroy or damage an art object. If this does not involve legal liability (does it?), it certainly involves moral liability. One of the main goals of AIC should be to see that art makes it safely to the next generation. Let’s put our hard earned money toward public education and research. AIC Certification will be great job security for our HQ in Washington, but not really helpful to the goals of AIC.

    Happy New year to all,

I share these fears. But I guess it boils down to if you think certification is better than nothing, and how it would affect the current PA/ Fellow system. The fact that AIC only refers clients to PA’s or Fellows makes them seem like some type of credential, at least.
